Case Study: Custom Window Covering Solution for Airstream’s Globetrotter Travel Trailers
Project Background
In 2023, JSL was awarded a contract to supply custom window blinds for a select fleet of Airstream Globetrotter travel trailers destined for a major North American rental operator specializing in luxury outdoor experiences. The iconic Airstream brand was founded in 1931 by American entrepreneur Wally Byam in Los Angeles, California. The company has since become synonymous with aluminum-bodied, aerodynamic travel trailers that have remained an enduring symbol of American adventure for over 95 years. Airstream’s Globetrotter line, known for its timeless ultra-modern design and European-inspired interior finish, has been a popular choice among discerning travelers and luxury fleet owners alike. This project encompassed 45 Globetrotter units across two model years—2023 and 2024—covering over 800 windows including side windows, rear panoramic windows, and windshield privacy coverings.
Technical Challenges
JSL’s engineering team conducted a comprehensive on-site assessment at the rental operator’s fleet maintenance facility and identified four core challenges unique to the RV environment:
- Curved and Non-Standard Window Geometries: The Globetrotter’s distinctive “silver bullet” silhouette requires window openings with significant curvature, particularly on the rear panoramic window where traditional rectangular blinds cannot be installed. Each curved window required independent measurements and bespoke manufacturing to achieve a precise fit without gaps that would compromise privacy and insulation.
- Extreme Space Constraints: RV window openings typically feature very narrow mounting depths, often less than 25mm from the glass to the interior wall panel. Standard household blind mechanisms are far too bulky for this application. The blind system had to fit within extremely limited cavity depths while still providing smooth mechanical operation.
- Vibration and Road Durability: Unlike stationary buildings, travel trailers are subjected to constant vibration, road shock, and temperature fluctuations ranging from sub-freezing mountain conditions to desert heat exceeding 45°C (113°F). Any window covering installed in an RV must withstand tens of thousands of miles of highway travel without loosening, jamming, or suffering mechanical failure. Standard residential blinds typically fail within months under these conditions.
- Zero- Dust Installation Protocol: All 45 Globetrotter units were actively rented to customers at the time of the retrofit. The installation schedule had to accommodate rental turnovers—each unit was only available for a 48-hour window between customer returns and the next rental departure. No drilling, cutting, or dust generation was permitted inside the occupied living spaces.
The JSL Solution
In response to these demanding requirements, JSL deployed its specialized RV and marine OEM capabilities:
- 3D Laser Scanning for Curved Windows: The JSL measurement team conducted handheld laser scanning on every non-standard window across all 45 units, capturing precise curvature radius, mounting depth, and interference points. This data was transmitted directly to our engineering team in China, who generated individual fabrication drawings for every curved window blind.
- Ultra-Slim Cassette Design: JSL engineered a custom ultra-slim roller blind cassette with a total profile height of just 22mm, specifically designed to fit within the Globetrotter’s narrow window recesses. The cassette was manufactured from lightweight anodized aluminum to minimize added weight—a critical factor for RV fuel efficiency and tongue weight limits.
- Heavy-Duty Vibration-Resistant Components: All moving components were upgraded to marine-grade specifications: stainless steel springs, reinforced fabric attachment bars, and dual-locking end brackets designed to resist loosening under continuous vibration. The fabric selected was a high-density blackout material with a special anti-fray edge coating, tested to withstand 50,000 extension/retraction cycles.
- No-Drill Clamp Mounting System: To satisfy the rental operator’s strict installation constraints, JSL developed a custom no-drill clamp system that secured the blind cassettes to existing window frame anchor points using spring-loaded tension brackets. This eliminated any need for power tools or permanent modification to the Airstream interiors.
Execution & Project Management
Due to the rental operator’s tight turnover schedule, the installation was executed in a rolling phased model—five units per week—over a total of nine weeks. Each unit was allocated a 36-hour work window: 12 hours for removal of original window coverings and measurement verification (laser scanning for curved windows), followed by 24 hours for installation once the custom blinds arrived. A dedicated two-person JSL installation team handled each unit, with a separate quality assurance technician performing post-installation testing for blackout performance, smooth operation under road-simulated vibration, and secure bracket fitment.
The supply chain was coordinated on a just-in-time basis: custom blinds for each unit were fabricated in JSL’s ISO-certified facility, air-shipped in batches matching the installation schedule, and cleared through customs in advance. No unit ever missed its rental departure window due to material delays.
Results & Client Feedback
The project was completed on schedule with zero customer complaints or operational disruptions. Post-installation road testing across 5,000 simulated highway miles confirmed zero bracket loosening, no fabric misalignment, and consistent blackout performance. The rental operator’s Fleet Operations Director commented: “JSL understood the unique demands of the RV environment better than any supplier we have worked with. Their no-drill solution protected our Airstream interiors, and the custom curved blinds fit perfectly on the rear panoramic windows—something multiple domestic suppliers told us was impossible. We have already signed a second-phase agreement for our remaining fleet units.”
This project has established JSL as a proven OEM partner for the premium RV sector, complementing our existing leadership in commercial office and luxury hospitality window covering solutions.
